Schizophrenia, Delusional Disorder Explained: Nature vs. Nurture
TITLE
Evaluate explanations of schizophrenia and delusional disorder, including a discussion of nature versus nurture.
ESSAY
🌟Evaluation of Explanations of Schizophrenia and Delusional Disorder🌟
🌟Nature vs. Nurture🌟
💥 The biological explanation, supported by the Gottesman and Shields study, leans towards the nature side as schizophrenia is believed to be inherited.
💥 The biochemical explanation, pointing to an excess of dopamine as a possible cause, can also be seen as supportive of nature due to genetic factors. However, it could be argued that excessive experiences may contribute to this biochemical imbalance, hinting at a nurture perspective.
💥 The cognitive explanation seems to support the nurture side, attributing the person's cognitions to their experiences. Nonetheless, the cognitive model by Frith acknowledges the significance of dopamine and biochemical processes in shaping the cognitive experiences of individuals with schizophrenia.
🌟Individual vs. Situational Factors🌟
💥 Evaluating the role of individual characteristics versus situational influences in the development of schizophrenia and delusional disorder is crucial. While genetics and biological factors may predispose someone to these conditions (individual), environmental stressors and life experiences can trigger or exacerbate symptoms (situational).
🌟Reductionism🌟
💥 Critically analyzing whether the explanations provided for schizophrenia and delusional disorder are reductionist is essential. For instance, if these explanations oversimplify complex psychological phenomena by focusing solely on biological, cognitive, or environmental factors without considering their interactions, they could be deemed reductionist.
🌟Application to Everyday Life🌟
💥 Assessing how psychological explanations of schizophrenia and delusional disorder can be applied to real💥world situations is vital. Understanding these conditions can inform interventions, support strategies, and destigmatize mental health issues in society.
🌟Deterministic Nature🌟
💥 Considering the deterministic nature of these explanations involves examining whether they imply that individuals with schizophrenia or delusional disorder have no control over their symptoms or outcomes. Evaluating the extent to which these explanations acknowledge the role of personal agency and resilience is important.
🌟Evidence to Support Explanations🌟
💥 Lastly, evaluating the empirical evidence backing up the explanations of schizophrenia and delusional disorder is crucial. Scrutinizing the validity, reliability, and generalizability of research studies and findings that support these theories is essential for a comprehensive assessment.
By considering these issues in the evaluation of explanations for schizophrenia and delusional disorder, a nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between biological, psychological, and environmental factors in the development and manifestation of these conditions can be achieved.

NOTES
Evaluate explanations of schizophrenia and delusional disorder, including a discussion of nature versus nurture. A range of issues could be used for evaluation here. These include:
💥 Named issue – nature versus nurture – The biological explanation (and the Gottesman and Shields study) support the nature side of the debate as schizophrenia is inherited. The biochemical explanation also supports nature as the excess of dopamine could be caused by genetic factors. It could, however, also be said to support nurture as it may be the overload of experiences that the schizophrenic person is having that lead to the excess of dopamine. The cognitive explanation can be seen to support the nurture side of the debate as the cognitions the person is experiencing are due to experiences. However, Frith/cognitive does not deny the importance of dopamine and the role of biochemical processes in the cognitive experiences of the schizophrenic patient.
💥 Individual versus situational
💥 Reductionism
💥 Application of psychology to everyday life (with reference to explanations)
💥 Deterministic nature of the explanations
💥 Evidence to support the explanations

Question Answer Marks Guidance
3(a) Outline ‘involvement’ as a marketing theory (Richarme, 2005). Award 1 mark for a basic outline of the term/concept. Award 2 marks for a detailed outline of the term/concept. For example: The amount of cognitive effort applied to the decision💥making process (1) is directly related to the level of importance the consumer places on acquiring the product (1). For example, low involvement in purchasing a pack of chewing gum but high involvement in the purchase of a cell phone (1). It is not necessarily to do with price but more to do with impact on the quality of life of the consumer (1). Other appropriate responses should also be credited.
