Changing Street Scape
TITLE
Describe a street which has changed over time
ESSAY
The street where I have lived my life has undergone a transformation, much like my own evolution. Formerly a peaceful, verdant sanctuary where children frolicked freely and neighbors were familiar faces, it has now become a bustling, lively center of commotion.
During my early years, when I was a child, this street was our playground. I recall the majestic elm trees that bordered the road, creating a leafy canopy overhead. The stately, neighboring houses stood shoulder to shoulder like old companions, each with a meticulously tended garden overflowing with roses and lilies. In the afternoons, the air resonated with the joyous laughter of children engaged in games, and the enticing scent of pies cooling on windowsills wafted around.
Subsequently, transformations began to unfold. Initially, the ancient elm trees were felled due to disease. In their stead, lampposts sprang up, illuminating the surroundings with their harsh, artificial glow, replacing the gentle, dappled sunlight of my youth. The dwellings also underwent changes as new families arrived, adding extensions and adorning the once weathered bricks with vibrant colors. The lush gardens gradually disappeared, replaced by meticulous lawns devoid of the untamed wildflowers that once thrived.
The street grew livelier as the years progressed. Novel stores emerged, their neon signage a sharp contrast to the former benign store we frequented. Bicycles were supplanted by cars, and the quiet of dusk gave way to the buzz of traffic. The children, including my own offspring, matured and ventured away, causing the sound of laughter to become a rare and precious occurrence.
Nevertheless, amidst this evolving landscape, certain aspects of the street have endured. The sense of community, while not as tightly knit as it once was, remains. Neighbors still exchange warm greetings, and the local bakery still offers the most delectable cinnamon rolls in town. Every year, we congregate to festoon the lampposts for Christmas, a novel tradition that imparts warmth to the frosty winter nights.
As I perch on my porch, observing the stream of passersby, I am often overcome with a wave of nostalgia. The street of my childhood, with its towering elm trees and ancient houses, only exists in my reminiscences. However, the current street, vibrant and teeming with diversity, serves as a testament to the passage of time. It has transformed, and I have transformed alongside it. Perchance, this evolution is a natural progression of life.
