ESSAY
In the quiet countryside of Sunflower Village, a new bus driver named Jack embarked on his job. At a modest height, he possessed a stern demeanor that initially intimidated the young children he transported to and from school. Despite his struggles with English, Jack was diligent in carrying out his duties to the best of his capabilities. He faced the challenge of probation, with a mere month to prove his worth and secure his employment, as he was hired by his uncle, the owner of the transport company.
Every day, Jack navigated the aged, narrow bridge that connected the school to the village, always mindful of its fragile state. The bridge, constructed prior to the Japanese Occupation, required cautious driving to ensure the safety of the children entrusted to him.
One rainy afternoon, a downpour began as the children boarded the bus after school. With a watchful eye on the increasingly precarious bridge, Jack’s concerns grew. Despite the rising water levels and the bridge's deteriorating condition, the impatient drivers behind him pressured him to proceed. The children, unsettled by the situation, looked to Jack for reassurance as they ventured across the bridge.
As they crossed, the bridge unexpectedly gave way, plunging the bus into the river and submerging the children. Acting swiftly, Jack sprang into action, rescuing several children before braving the waters once more in search of the missing child. Though exhausted, he remained resolute, maneuvering through the strong currents to locate and save the last child.
Witnessed by a crowd that had gathered on the shore, Jack’s heroism unfolded before their eyes. Despite their cheers and encouragement, Jack chose to return to the water, determined to ensure the safety of every child. The spectators held their breath as he disappeared beneath the surface, hoping for his safe return.
Tragically, Jack did not emerge from the water. His lifeless body was discovered the following day, leaving the village in mourning. His selfless bravery had left an indelible mark on the community, evoking admiration and respect. The school honored his memory with a day of remembrance, and the parents of the rescued children paid tribute to his courage and sacrifice.
A memorial was erected in Jack’s honor, bearing his name boldly inscribed. Every time someone crossed the bridge, they would fondly remember the hero who had given his life to safeguard their children. Jack’s legacy as a symbol of courage and selflessness lived on in the hearts of the villagers, forever etched in their memories.
