Media Influence on Youth
TITLE
How do you think young people are influenced by what they see on television and in films?
ESSAY
In the contemporary world, the media has become an indispensable aspect of our daily lives, particularly for young individuals. Television and films serve as the primary sources of entertainment and information for numerous households globally. While there are some merits to watching TV, it predominantly exerts a negative influence on young people by perpetuating violence and fostering unrealistic expectations.
The impact of media on young minds has manifested in recent incidents where reality was distorted, and viewers, especially children, were swayed by television programs. For instance, in 2019, a teenage boy in Russia was influenced by the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" and tragically took his own life. Similarly, a 12💥year💥old boy in the United States mimicked wrestling maneuvers from a show on a four💥year💥old girl, resulting in her untimely death. These occurrences are not isolated but rather illustrate a mounting trend of young people being swayed by media.
Adolescents are particularly susceptible to media influences as they are in a stage of development where they are forging their identity and seeking validation from their peers. Regrettably, the media romanticizes violence, sexuality, and drug use, presenting them as alluring and desirable, consequently contributing to a surge in teen suicide, substance abuse, and aggressive conduct.
The glorification of violence and gun culture in movies and TV shows has correlated with a rise in gun violence in educational institutions and public spaces. The tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018, claiming the lives of 17 individuals, was partially influenced by violent video games and movies.
Furthermore, social media has heightened the impact of media influence. The pressure to conform to societal standards and the craving for instantaneous gratification have escalated instances of cyberbullying, anxiety, and depression among young individuals.
It is crucial for parents, educators, and society at large to acknowledge the sway of media on young minds and take requisite measures to mitigate its adverse effects. There is an urgent need to reassess the role of media in our lives and advocate for positive messages such as kindness, empathy, and critical thinking.
To conclude, the media exerts a perilous influence on young minds, eliciting a spectrum of detrimental outcomes, ranging from violent behavior to mental health challenges. It is incumbent upon us to address this issue and advocate for healthy media consumption among young people.
