ESSAY

It was a typical summer evening, the sun had set, and the moonlight filtered through the leaves of the rain tree in the deserted car park. The chirping of crickets was the only sound that broke the stillness of the night. As I walked towards home, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. I turned around quickly, but there was no one there. I brushed it off as my imagination playing tricks on me and continued walking.

However, the persistent sound of footsteps made me turn around once more. This time, I was surprised to see an old lady standing next to the tree. She wore a floral gown and a pink scarf on her head, and her friendly smile shone through her sunglasses. She motioned for me to come closer, and hesitantly, I approached her.

"Hello," she greeted me with a gentle voice. "I'm delighted to see you. May I offer you something?"

I nodded silently, curious about the unusual encounter. From her pocket, the lady retrieved a locket with a intricate design and aged appearance. She placed it in my hands, urging me to keep it safe as it was a cherished family heirloom.

I was captivated by the locket's beauty and touched by the lady's generosity. When I looked up again, she had mysteriously vanished into thin air.

Puzzled and intrigued, I made my way home, clasping the locket tightly. Upon reaching home, I was met by my tearful mother awaiting me.

"Grace," she whispered, her voice trembling, "your grandmother has passed away."

Overwhelmed by the news, I struggled to comprehend the situation. Although I had little connection with my grandmother, I was aware of the estranged relationship between her and my mother.

My mother noticed the locket in my hand and inquired about its origin, her eyes widening in disbelief as I recounted the encounter with the old lady in the car park.

Taking the locket, my mother recognized it immediately. "This is my mother's locket. The portrait on it is of me as a teenager," she revealed, her voice filled with emotion.

Everything clicked into place. My grandmother had intended to pass down the locket as a gesture of love to my mother, but their unresolved issues had hindered it. Through me, my grandmother had found a way to deliver the locket posthumously to my mother.

I was filled with a profound sense of wonder and reverence for the mysterious events that transpired. Holding the locket, I understood that my grandmother's love transcended time and generations, leaving an enduring legacy of family connection and affection.
