The bully
ESSAY
Maya Chen’s heart pounded as she stepped into the bustling halls of her new school. She clutched her backpack tightly, her eyes darting around anxiously as she tried to make sense of the chaos around her.
The noise was overwhelming, the constant chatter and laughter of hundreds of middle schoolers echoing off the walls. Maya felt small and insignificant in the midst of it all, her heart sinking as she realized how hard it would be to make friends here.
But she was determined to try. She had left behind everything she knew to come to this new town, and she wasn’t going to let fear stop her from finding a place to belong.
As she made her way to her first class, Maya’s nerves began to ease. The teacher was kind, and the other students seemed friendly enough. Maya even managed to strike up a conversation with the girl next to her, a bubbly redhead named Chloe.
But just as Maya was starting to feel hopeful, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see a boy with shaggy brown hair and a smirk on his face.
‘Hey there, new girl,’ he said, his voice dripping with contempt.
Maya felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. She had heard about bullies before, but she had never actually met one.
‘Um, hi,’ she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
The boy laughed, his eyes glittering with malice. ‘What’s your name?’
‘L💥Maya,’ she stammered.
‘Well, Maya, let me give you a piece of advice,’ he said, leaning in close. ’his school is mine. You’d do well to remember that.’
And with that, he sauntered off, leaving Maya trembling with fear and confusion.
Over the next few days, Maya’s encounters with the boy, whose name she learned was Jason, grew more frequent and more vicious. He would taunt her in the halls, make fun of her in class, and even steal her lunch money.
Maya tried to ignore him, tried to pretend that he wasn’t getting to her. But she couldn't help the sinking feeling in her chest every time he approached her, the way her palms would sweat and her heart would race.
One day,Maya made her way through the hallways, feeling more and more anxious with every step. Suddenly, she felt a sharp tug on her backpack. She turned around to see Tyler grinning at her with malicious delight.
"Hey, new girl," he sneered. "Looks like you could use a little help carrying your books."
Maya's heart sank as she watched Tyler grab her books and toss them into the nearest trash can. She tried to grab them back, but Tyler was too quick for her. He shoved her hard, sending her stumbling backwards into the wall.
"Stay out of my way, loser," Tyler spat, before sauntering away with his cronies in tow.
Maya felt hot tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She wanted nothing more than to curl up in a ball and disappear. But she knew she couldn't let Tyler get the best of her. She took a deep breath and set her jaw.
Over the next few days, Tyler's taunting only grew worse. He tripped her in the cafeteria, stole her lunch money, and spread rumors about her around the school. Maya felt like she was living in a nightmare.
One day, as she was walking home from school, Maya heard a muffled cry coming from a nearby alleyway. She hesitated for a moment, then cautiously approached the source of the noise. Peering around the corner, she saw Tyler and his gang of bullies shoving a younger boy against the wall.
"Give us your lunch money, dork," Tyler growled.
Maya's heart pounded as she watched the scene unfold. She knew she had to do something. Summoning all her courage, she stepped forward.
"Leave him alone, Tyler," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "This isn't right."
Tyler turned to face her, his eyes flashing with anger.
"Who do you think you are?" he snarled. "You don't tell me what to do."
Maya stood her ground, her heart racing.
"You're a bully, Tyler," she said firmly. "You need to stop."
For a moment, Tyler looked as if he might hit her. But then, to Maya's surprise, he took a step back.
"You're right," he said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet. "I'm sorry. I don't know why I've been such a jerk lately."
Maya felt a surge of relief flood through her. Maybe, just maybe, things would get better now.
Over the next few weeks, Maya watched as Tyler slowly but surely began to change. He started being kinder to the other students, and even apologized to Maya for all the trouble he'd caused her. Maya couldn't believe it 💥 the boy who had made her life a living hell was now becoming one of her closest friends.
As the school year drew to a close, Maya looked back on all that had happened. It had been a tough road, but she had learned so much about herself and about the power of standing up for what was right. And most importantly, she had made a true friend.
